- DISCOVERIES OF NEW PLANETS
-
- William Herschel (1738 - 1822), a German-born astronomer living in England, was
- the first observer to concentrate on objects outside the solar system. In the
- solar system he discovered a new planet, Uranus, in 1781, which he first took to
- be a comet. Later it was confirmed as a planet and the solar system doubled in
- size. This was the first discovery of a planet since classical times. Herschel
- also began to get an idea of the nature of the universe with the help of the
- most powerful telescope of his time, which he himself had built.
-
- Besides being an astronomer, Herschel was also a composer and an accomplished builder of telescopes.
-
- After the discovery of Uranus, a new planet was found 62 years later because of the irregularities in the orbit of Uranus.
- The new planet was named Neptune and the solar system had once again expanded.
